Novian Works · Oslo

Event-driven .NET systems, built to stay up.

I’m Onur Gümüş. For 20+ years I’ve built distributed systems, from border control at Dubai Airports to the People Card in Microsoft Teams. Through Novian Works I share what I’ve learned about CQRS, event sourcing and the actor model.

  • 20+ years building distributed systems
  • Millions of passengers a year through the Dubai Airports smart gates
  • 100M+ users of the People Card in Teams & Outlook
  • 5 published titles on .NET: a book and four video courses

Expertise

What I do

Architecture reviews to find the risks, hands-on delivery to fix them, and workshops so a team owns the result.

01

Architecture review

A second pair of eyes on an event-driven system, before a wrong decision becomes expensive to undo.

  • Aggregate boundaries and the domain model
  • Consistency, ordering and failure modes
  • Read models, projections and read-your-writes
  • Written findings with a prioritised plan
02

Design & delivery

Building alongside the team, pairing as we go, so the knowledge stays once the system ships.

  • CQRS and event sourcing in C# or F#
  • Sagas for workflows that span services
  • Akka.NET actors and clustering
  • Kubernetes deployment and observability
03

Team workshops

The hands-on Functional CQRS workshop from DDD Europe, tailored to a team’s own domain.

  • Commands → events → read models, built live
  • A cross-aggregate saga as the finale
  • Ready-to-run skeleton, no setup time lost
  • In C# or F#

Biometric smart gates at Dubai Airports

Context
Automated border control: passengers verified biometrically and cleared at the gate, with no room for downtime.
What I did
Architected the Akka.NET platform behind the gates.

Live People Card in Teams and Outlook

Context
The profile card that opens when you hover a person, live across Teams and Outlook.
What I did
Built the Live People Card with React, TypeScript and Web Components.

Reservoir-modelling data pipeline

Context
Getting messy real-world data into ResX, a reservoir-modelling platform, reliably.
What I did
F# microservices for the ingestion pipeline on Kubernetes, including AI-based correction of malformed data.

Open source & products

Things I build in the open

open-source framework

FCQRS

CQRS and event sourcing for .NET on Akka.NET. Aggregates, sagas and projections with read-your-writes out of the box, idiomatic in both C# and F#. On NuGet.

  • Sagas that survive crashes and resume where they left off
  • Atomic multi-event writes
  • Per-aggregate snapshot policies
  • One-line OpenTelemetry: a whole workflow as one trace
  • SQLite, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle and more

reference apps

focument

One event-sourced system written twice, in C# 15 with union types and in idiomatic F#.

open-source contributions

F# ecosystem

Proposed and implemented Async.StartImmediateAsTask in FSharp.Core (RFC FS-1028). Also Fable, FSharp.Control.TaskSeq and NHibernate.

About

Onur Gümüş

Software architect · Oslo, Norway

Software engineer with 20+ years across border infrastructure, telecom, banking and energy. I work deep in F#, C#, DDD and Akka.NET, and I’ve written a book and four video courses on .NET.

I care as much about how a design is taught as how it runs, which is why I run workshops and build in the open.

Ask my local assistant
